Radiofrequency Ablation in Vancouver

Correct painful and unsightly varicose veins –  and start showing your legs again

Varicose veins appear when damaged valves allow blood to reverse flow (reflux) and pool in the veins below the skin – typically on the legs and ankles. Aging, pregnancy, hormonal changes, weight gain and long hours spent standing can lead to varicose veins, but genetics and lifestyle can also play a role in their development. Varicose veins can also cause aching, swelling, night cramps, leg fatigue, itching and burning.

If you’re frustrated with twisted and painful veins, radiofrequency ablation (also known as vein ablation) is a minimally invasive way to eliminate those unsightly bulges. At False Creek Healthcare, we offer radiofrequency ablation in our modern Vancouver facility to treat and correct varicose veins.

What happens during radiofrequency ablation?

After a consultation with our experienced, board-certified vascular surgeon, your surgeon will make a small incision and direct radiofrequency energy through a thin tube inserted into the vein. The heat destroys the tissue along the length of the vein and seals it off to prevent future blood flow. The vein collapses and is gradually reabsorbed by the body. Radiofrequency ablation is performed with local anaesthesia or a mild sedative. You should be able to walk and return to normal activities immediately afterward, with the exception of strenuous exercise and heavy lifting.

Radiofrequency ablation benefits

  • Safe & effective varicose vein treatment
  • Fast results & rapid healing
  • Immediate relief from painful veins
  • No general anaesthesia or overnight stays
  • Minimal downtime & discomfort
  • No scars or stitches

Radiofrequency ablation recovery

You will need to wear a compression stocking or bandage for a brief period after the procedure. During a follow-up appointment, your doctor will use an ultrasound to ensure the vein is fully closed and collapsed. You may experience minor bruising, pain, or prickling at the treatment site, and a slight burning sensation. These side effects are usually minimal, however, and should resolve within a few days after the procedure.

Radiofrequency ablation results

The radiofrequency energy collapses the damaged veins to eliminate swelling, discolouration and allow for natural reabsorption. As any minor bruising and redness subsides, the bulging veins will flatten, fade and eventually disappear, leaving you with smoother, more youthful-looking legs. While radiofrequency ablationcloses individual veins, the procedure can’t change or alter your tendency to develop new varicose veins over time.

Preparing for radiofrequency ablation

Your physician will provide detailed instructions to ensure that you are properly prepared for radiofrequency ablation. Patients are usually asked not to shave or apply lotion to their legs for 24 hours before the procedure. You should wear loose, comfortable clothing or a pair of shorts. You will also receive guidelines on whether you need to avoid certain medications or supplements before and after your treatment.

Am I a candidate for radiofrequency ablation?

During a one-on-one consultation, our physicians will determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for radiofrequency ablation. Typically, good candidates are non-smokers who have:

  • Good health and a stable body weight
  • Realistic expectations for the procedure
  • Large, raised or bulging veins
  • Painful veins that throb or swell
  • The ability to walk on their own
  • No active rashes or infections
